Church spires once pointed to a destiny in heaven. Sir Lloyd Geering thinks their time is over and we must plan and build ‘The City of God’ or ‘The New Jerusalem’ in the here and now, not wait to be taken there. The Christchurch earthquakes give the opportunity for citizens to work out their own plans for a renewed city.
Sir Lloyd Geering’s views on Christianity led to his being tried for heresy in 1967 in one of Christchurch’s now badly-damaged inner-city churches. He has moved from the margins to the mainstream in religious thinking and in his standing in our country – as knight and a Member of the Order of New Zealand.
