The wildly popular Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra rock the four-string with a saucy swagger in a charmingly modern take on the old show-band tradition of the 1940s and 50s.
Delighting crowds of all ages, the orchestra’s signature sound features up to eleven ukuleles, a double bass and a choir of gorgeous voices.
Formed in late 2006 at a tiny café in the capital by respected Wellington musicians Age Pryor and Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords (who wont be performing at the Festival), the band’s members also include jazz maestro Daniel Yeabsley from Fat Freddy’s Drop and art-rocker Bek Coogan from Cortina.
Their unpredictable live show features heavenly harmonies and stunning solos, juxtaposed against hilariously budget lighting effects, madcap antics and questionable banter, causing spontaneous audience merriment.
