Frank Martin Mass
Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Choir
A liturgical performance during the 10.30am Solemn Mass.
In this strikingly powerful Mass (first performed in 1963, after the composer’s death), two choirs alternate between supporting and contending against each other. There are moments of dynamic intensity, and sudden contrasts. It is a remarkably fluid and expressive piece, which is proving, with several new CD recordings, to have constant appeal to performers and listeners.
The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Choir presents a Solemn Mass at 10:30 am every Sunday, exploring a wide repertoire through orchestral, contemporary, polyphonic and plainsong Mass settings. Regular concerts and recording opportunities, which feature the associated Cathedral Orchestra, include an annual St John Passion and Messiah. During seven overseas tours, the CBS Choir and Orchestra have performed in most major cathedrals and churches, and set off at the end of this year for a concert tour of the Baltic States, Portugal, and southern Spain. Their Musical Director for 40 years has been Don Whelan MNZM.
